The wrap was torn and the book although in good condition did not appear to be new. The cover had a small stain inside the upper edge and the outside was creased in places as if something had pressed on it. Some of the corners of the pages were bent over. On April 20, 1964, the JAMA cover featured a reproduction of Jan van Eyck's St. Jerome
